Recent change in modality in informal spoken British English: 1990s–2010s

چکیده
Studies in modality comprise a complex canon of functional, formal, sociological and diachronic analyses language. The current understanding how English language speakers use is unclear; while some research argues that core modal auxiliaries are decline, they reported as increasing elsewhere. A lack contemporary representative spoken data has rendered it difficult to reconcile such differing perspectives. To address this issue, article presents study using the Spoken BNC2014 component BNC1994. We investigate frequency auxiliaries, semi-modals, lexical modality-indicating devices (MIDs), well functions informal British English, between 1990s 2010s. results analysis manifold. find appear be semi-modals MIDs relatively stable. However, on form-by-form basis, there significant evidence both increases decreases individual expressions within each set. As result, problematises form-based studies change, illustrates value coherence functional can afford future work.
